How to Get the Most of Your Wall Clock as a Décor Item

Ever considered using your wall clock as décor? Sometimes, I can’t help but wonder if mobile phones and computers will completely take over wristwatches, bedside alarm clocks and wall clocks for time-telling. I hope not because in my view, wall clocks are enduring and very importantly, interior decor items for homes or offices. In addition to their time-telling feature, they have a way of giving personality to a space.

Whatever look you want to achieve, whether modern and edgy, old-fashioned or formal, green and eco-friendly or just fun and playful, there are designs that cater. These days there are even designer wall clocks ☺.

Personally, wall clocks carry childhood memories from when I was learning how to tell the time. It happens that the particular wall clock I learnt to tell the time with still sits pretty on the corridor wall of my parent’s home. It’s also working just fine (which speaks to the quality) decades later.

So to get the most decor value from your wall clock, pick a strategic spot in the room for it. The idea is to achieve visibility as well as beauty. It doesn’t have to be the first item to be seen as you walk into the room though. Installing on a side wall creates a nice surprise effect for statement pieces.

Then decide on the style – modern, futuristic, rustic, sleek, artistic and so on. The list is endless. Also, consider buying larger pieces over the small ones. This is because the larger clocks help to amplify the design and the figures on the clock (if any). But keep the size of the room in mind while shopping as you don’t want to buy a wall clock that is too massive for the space.

Wall clocks, however, are not easy to pick out. Usually, you want to find one with great quality which simultaneously makes the perfect statement. So it is important not to be in a hurry. Think of it like searching for a daily companion that will help you to number your days. You could never do that in a hurry. That’s why there’s bare wall space in my living room — I haven’t quite found the one! I have reserved its space for whenever it wanders into my life. Luckily, I found the perfect one for my kitchen – a simple and fresh piece (see below). And, it was quite affordable at the time from Shoprite in Enugu.

But, does every room need a wall clock? The living room and other frequently used spaces may need wall clocks, while the bedrooms for instance can make do with the personal phones of its occupants for time-telling. Alarm clocks might also add to the aesthetics of the bedrooms, if you please. Plus, they might help the children wake up early for school.

Let me know what you think about clocks. Would you trade in beauty for legibility of the figures of the clock?
